Основные позиции в руководстве АФТ - КПП принадлежат правым профсоюзным лидерам. С 1955 пост президента АФТ - КПП занимает Дж. Мини. Руководство АФТ - КПП проводит политику классового сотрудничества, сдерживает борьбу американских трудящихся за свои права, часто ограничивается лишь символической поддержкой бастующих; оно стоит на позициях антикоммунизма, поддерживает агрессивный внешнеполитический курс американского империализма. АФТ - КПП играет ведущую роль в Международной конфедерации свободных профсоюзов (См. Международная конфедерация свободных профсоюзов). В результате соглашательской позиции руководства АФТ - КПП влияние этого профсоюзного объединения среди американских рабочих постепенно падает. Доля американских рабочих - членов профсоюзов, объединяемых АФТ - КПП, уменьшилась с 22,5\% в 1954 до 17,6\% в 1966. В АФТ - КПП в 1966 входили 129 профсоюзов (15,09 млн. членов). К декабрю 1967 численность АФТ - КПП сократилась до 14,3 млн. членов.Среди рядовых членов профсоюзов и части местных профсоюзных руководителей постепенно усиливается недовольство соглашательской, оппортунистической политикой руководства АФТ - КПП, всё активнее выдвигаются требования об усилении забастовочной борьбы, борьбы за гражданские права и проф. свободы. В 1967 - 68 эти тенденции нашли своё выражение в разрыве с руководством АФТ - КПП одного из крупнейших профсоюзов США - Объединённого профсоюза рабочих автомобильной и авиационной промышленности (1,3 млн. членов), руководитель которого (У. Рейтер) занимал с 1955 пост вице-президента АФТ - КПП.
